Visions and Challenges:
International Contemporary Art Institutions Now!
On the initiative of the Danish Arts Council's Committee for International Visual Arts, the Visual Arts Centre arranged a conference on the subject of the current challenges for international contemporary art institutions. The conference took place at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art on November 30 2006.
The four key speakers were:
Iwona Blazwick, director of Whitechapel Art Gallery, London
Maria Lind, director of
IASPIS, International Artist Studio Program, Stockholm
Nicolaus Schafhausen, director of
Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam
All were asked to adress three key questions:
- What does it mean to be an international agent within the field of contemporary visual art at the global art scene and at the same time have to relate to local and national expectations?
- What visions and strategies do you have for your institution in relation to the various audiences and stakeholders your institution relates to?
- How do you navigate strategically within today’s economic conditions and structures for art institutions? Does it matter whether the institution is being perceived as having an either commercial or non-commercial profile?
