Residencies in Denmark - DIVA

In order to encourage the exchange between Danish and foreign artistic life the Danish Arts Council has established an artist-in-residence-programme in Denmark called DIVA (Danish International Visiting Artists Exchange Programme). The programme is developed on the basis of positive experiences from a similar programme within the area of the visual arts. The overall purpose with the programme is to further dialogue within the world of the arts by introducing foreign artists to Danish artists and the Danish arts scene and encourage them to actively contribute to the development of this arena.

The DIVA programme makes it possible for art and culture institutions, municipalities and other relevant professional players as hosts to invite foreign artists and artistic groups within the sphere of the Danish Arts Council (i.e. visual arts, music, literature and performing arts) to stay and work in Denmark for a longer period of time, typically 1-6 months. Architects, designers and film directors will not be eligible, unless they are considered to be contributing to the development of such art forms as are covered by the programme.

The Danish Arts Council covers travelling expenses and accommodation and pays the artists a monthly fee of DKK 10,000. The Danish Arts Council furthermore pays a monthly amount of DKK 5, 000 to the hosts to cover administrative expenses in connection with the programme.

Who can apply?
Only Danish institutions and other professional players can apply. Potential residents cannot themselves apply directly, but may contact Danish institutions and art professionals with a view to applying. Arts institutions, like for example a gallery, a theatre, an orchestra, a festival, an educational institute, a municipality etc. must act as hosts during the stay and arrange accommodation, plan a programme, help to create professional networks with Danish artists, artistic groups etc.

In return the foreign artist is obliged during his stay to enter into an active and open cooperation with the Danish arts scene in the form of e.g.: joint performances, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, give master classes, lectures etc. Read more about the obligations of both hosts and artists in the guidelines.

The Danish Arts Council expects that 25-30 foreign artists will annually come to Denmark with financial support from the programme, for which so far DKK 6 mil. have been set aside for the coming years. The grant covers the following areas:

  • Visual arts
  • Literature
  • Music
  • Performing arts
