Application guidelines

Responsibilities and obligations in connection with the program:

What are the offers to foreign artists and what are the obligations in connection with their stay?

  • The artist’s journey to and from Denmark including transit is paid for (economy-class or equivalent)
  • The artist receives a monthly grant of DKK 10,000.
  • The artist is provided with furnished accommodation and basic housing expenses are being paid for.
  • According to requirement the artist may be offered the loan of studio, workroom, rehearsal hall etc. Typically, the host will make the practical arrangements for this.
  • The artist is obliged to follow the programme that has been agreed with the host and approved by the Danish Arts Council. This means i.a. to participate actively in networks with Danish artists, be prepared to hold master classes, give lectures, exhibit works etc.
  • The artist commits himself to participating in a public arrangement where he talks about his own work and stay in Denmark as well as possibly participating in brief video clips and giving interviews to be used on the Danish Arts Council’s homepage www.kunstraadet.dk
  • The artist must furthermore prepare a brief evaluation of his stay in Denmark.

What are the obligations on behalf of the host?

  • The host must contact the relevant artist and formulate the application
  • With assistance from the Danish Arts Agency the host is responsible for obtaining a visa for the applicant if necessary.
  • The host is responsible for, together with the artist, to prepare a programme for the artist’s stay in Denmark describing the extent and content of possible cooperation projects, as well as giving information on Danish networking partners with whom the artist must be in contact during his stay.
  • The host is responsible for finding accommodation and securing agreement of rent of accommodation for the artist within the given economic framework and to see him settled in upon arrival. The accommodation must comply with the minimum standard as stated by the Danish Arts Agency.
  • The host must – as occasion arises – help to find and possibly finance a studio, workroom, practice room etc. If necessary, the Danish Arts Agency may help to find suitable facilities, but the programme cannot provide the means for a possible rent.
  • During the artist’s stay in Denmark the host must be prepared to help with the solution of practical problems and the surmounting of cultural barriers.
  • The host must submit a financial account of the programme and prepare a brief evaluation.
  • The host is responsible for the total sequence of the artist’s stay; including that the physical frames are well-functioning and the foreign artist is participating in a network in Danish artistic life.

On service level and possibilities for complaints
Basically, the hosts must be responsible for servicing the artists. This entails i.e. calling for the residents, planning of programme and dealing with smaller everyday problems. The Danish Arts Agency must offer advice and guidance in connection with application and if possible help with procuring visa for the resident if required. The Danish Arts Agency furthermore acts as complaints authority to both residents and hosts.

On housing and housing standards
The host must arrange for the accommodation. The resident in question must be the sole occupier and is not allowed to let the accommodation to a third person. All expenses in connection with the residence, such as water, electricity, maintenance and cleaning must be within the limits of the Danish Arts Council’s total accommodation subsidy. The owner cannot demand any extra expenses for water etc. from the resident or the Danish Arts Council. In special cases of disagreements between host and resident, e.g. in connection with damage to the flat, the problems should as a rule be solved between the parties themselves. The accommodation must be minimum 50 square metres, with own kitchen, hot water, bath and toilet. The accommodation must be of good standard, fully furnished with internet access and TV and include ordinary table ware, kitchen utensils and bed linen.
